Kiwano Melon

This will be a nice simple post.  I ate a kiwano melon (Cucumis metuliferus) today.  It’s a way cool, interesting fruit – as obvious from the picture.  Originally from South Africa, it is grown in the US now.  It’s actually quite good in a way.  The green jelly surrounding the seeds is  sweet and tart, tasting green like a cucumber, but with banana, melon, and maybe a little kiwi? thrown in.  Now that I think about it, it tastes like green jell-o.

Unfortunately it comes with seeds, in each little packet of jelly, and it is hard to get them out.  Supposedly you ca eat them, but I find them rather bitter.  (websites say they are bland, but no, they have a touch of bitterness to them.).

So now, I need to figure out how I can eat this.  Various recipes say to put in salads, or to make smoothies.  But I think it will take some work – and maybe a strainer.

Wish me luck.  I will update you.
